Now, with their own electric utility, rural residents not only have electricity to help them with their chores, but they also have a say in how their utility is run. VEC and 24 other distribution cooperatives own Dairyland Power Cooperative, which provides service over a large geographic area of the Midwest including parts of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois.

Vernon Electric Cooperative provides electricity and other services to approximately 10, members in Southwestern Wisconsin.
Our service territory consists primarily of the rural areas and the Village of Readstown. There are many advantages to being a member of an electric co-op, but one of the best advantages is we are service driven. Since we are a cooperative, we operate as a not-for-profit organization and you, as a member, have our margins allocated back to you as capital credits. Businesses benefit from onsite technical assistance, personalized business counseling, access to resources, peer mentoring, and the synergy of co-locating with other innovative minds.
We have a facility and a network that welcomes investors, grows food businesses and attracts entrepreneurs to a very cool place to locate a business! World class award-winning cheeses and butters and many local niche brands are seen on grocery store shelves throughout North America.
The community is also home to manufacturers that are unrelated to the food industry. For example, Nelson Global Products designs, manufactures, and markets a wide variety of high performance OEM and aftermarket products for the global commercial vehicle, on-highway and off-highway markets and the outdoor recreational vehicle and power markets.
Tourism is another important Vernon County industry. Foodie tours are popular, with plenty of farmers markets, co-ops, restaurants, music festivals, microbreweries, and wineries to visit. Agri-tourism invites travelers to stay on a family farm and try their hand at traditional chores while learning how their food is grown. Many tourists come to Vernon County to visit Amish farms and shop for handmade quilts and furniture. Boating and fishing of all kinds is enjoyed in the mighty Mississippi River that defines the western border of the county.
Vernon County still has room to grow, and the community is ready to welcome incoming businesses.
