The 85 ft 26 metre rise of the lift is higher than the Angel of the North. Your journey will take less than a minute. The escalators are no longer operational and will only be used as an exit in case of emergency. The Pedestrian Tunnel — ft metres long and at The Grade II listed structure has been carefully restored to its former glory, with 28, ceramic tiles replaced and 2, meters of cable installed.
The pedestrian tunnel is 3. Two wooden escalators - still the longest wooden escalators in the world - have been kept at either end of the tunnel. Although they are no longer operational, the escalators will now be lit to highlight their historical significance. The 85ft rise of the escalators is the same height as the Angel of the North, and at ft in length, are the same as the wingspan of a jet.
However, GB Building Solutions went into administration in , delaying the project. The two remaining escalators, which are original and of historical significance, will be opened up to public view and illuminated with feature lighting. New lighting, CCTV, control and communications systems were installed, in addition to carrying out repairs to the tunnel structure itself and to the historic finishes within the tunnel such as the tiling and panelling.
The concrete floor sections were also refurbished or replaced. During the closure, a free, timetabled shuttle bus for pedestrians and cyclists was in operation between 6am and 8pm, seven days a week, days a year.
The tunnel reopened at midday on 7 August , operating initially for 14 hours a day until installation of the new inclined lifts is completed when the service will be 24 hours.
